The Power of Obeying God’s Instructions

The Power of Obedience

People who obey God’s instructions always experience the miraculous. Obeying God’s instructions can turn lack into abundance, failure into success, shame into glory, and the ordinary into extraordinary. We ought to remember that God is the only wise God (Jude 25), He knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), and He knows what lies in the darkness. The Bible says in Daniel 2 verse 22:

He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him. (New King James Version).

You see God knows all things and when He reveals hidden things, it is for our benefit. God’s instructions may not sound logical, but when a person obeys it anyway they are bound to see God’s power at work.

When God gives an instruction, it is to bless and uplift us. Our obedience does not benefit God, He is already God; all-powerful, only wise, excellent and perfect. He is the creator of Heaven and Earth. Our obedience to God’s instructions benefits us.

Let us take a look at a few examples of God’s instructions and the people who obeyed, and what happened when they did.

1. Peter Has a Great Catch (Luke 5: 1 – 7):

Before Jesus called Peter, he was a fisherman. One day, as Jesus stood by the Lake of Gennesaret to preach, as the multitudes pressed about Him, he got into Peter’s boat and asked to use the boat to preach. So Jesus sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When Jesus finished speaking, He told Peter “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

The Bible records in Luke 5 verses 5 – 7:

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. (New King James Version).

Peter obeyed the instruction of Jesus and He had a great catch, a catch so large that the net began to break and he had to call his business partners to help out, and they filled both boats with fish till they began to sink. So Peter goes from working all night and catching absolutely nothing, to having such a great catch that he could not handle alone. That is the power of obeying God’s instruction!

2. Wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2: 1 – 11):

This is the first miracle Jesus performed. Jesus, His disciples and His mother were at a wedding and at some point the hosts ran out of wine. Mary the mother of Jesus informed Jesus that they had run out of wine, and then she told the servants who were working at the wedding “whatever He (Jesus) says to you, do it” (John 2:5).

The Bible says in John 2 verses 6 – 9:

Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.

They obeyed Jesus and their obedience resulted in the miraculous. The instruction did not sound logical, but they obeyed anyway and lack turned to abundance, shame turned to joy and celebration. As a matter of fact, it resulted in an unprecedented occurrence. God said He will do a new thing (Isaiah 43:19), so He is not limited to what is within the realm of possibility. He does the impossible and He does new things. Obeying God can give you an unprecedented breakthrough.

If you take away just one thing from this message today, it should be “whatever He (God) says to you, do it”. Obeying God’s instructions turns hopeless situations around.

3. The Apostles and Disciples Tarry in Jerusalem

After Jesus had died and he rose from the dead on the third day, He told his disciples (In Luke 24 verse 49):

“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (New King James Version).

Another account in Acts 1 verses 4 – 5:

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (New King James Version).

They obeyed Jesus and stayed in Jerusalem and waited for the promise of the Father. Acts 1 verses 12 – 14 records:

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

If only Christians can obey the instructions of God, they will receive the promise!

Let us take a look at what happened as they obeyed. Acts 2 verses 1 – 4:

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (New King James Version).

Hallelujah!

What do you think would have happened if they disobeyed Jesus and did not wait for the promise of the Father? Or waited, but you chose to wait in Galilee or Nazareth instead of Jerusalem as instructed? Thank God they chose to obey Jesus and follow the details of the instruction. A person who disobeys the instructions of God forfeits a key to blessings and breakthroughs.

Read 1 Samuel 15 and see the consequence of disobeying God’s instructions. The book of Jonah also shows the consequence of disobeying God’s instructions.

Jesus said that a person who hears the Word of God and obeys is a wise person who builds their house upon a rock. In Matthew 7 verses 24 – 27:

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (New King James version)

Obeying God is wisdom; it enhances your life, beautifies your life, secures the miraculous and keeps you secured.

Prompt obedience is important.

The Ways We Receive Instructions from God

1. The Word of God (The Bible) is God’s instructions. The Word says in 2 Timothy 3 verse 16:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (New King James version)

2. God can also speak to us directly and give us an instruction.

3. God can also send a prophet to give us an instruction.

4. When we attend a church service for instance, God can give us instructions through the message preached.

Action Plans

  1. Make a Bible Study plan that will help you study the Word and as you study, obey the Word.

  2. Get a notebook and document the instructions you receive from God.

  3. Track the last instructions you received from God which you have not obeyed, and obey them.

  4. Ask God to give you the grace for obedience.
