Anatomy of a Miracle: Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

This Bible study will look closely at a miracle Jesus Christ performed in Matthew 9: 27 – 31. Anatomy means “the internal structure or workings”, and so we will look at the internal structure of the miracle, and its component parts.

Let us look at the text, Matthew 9 verse 27 – 31:

27 When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!”

28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows it.” 31 But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country. (New King James Version).

Two blind men followed Jesus, crying out and asking for mercy. Jesus said “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”, this implies that they prayed/requested that He heal them of blindness. They proclaimed that God was able to do it. Then Jesus touched their eyes saying “According to your faith let it be to you.” In other words, let it be for you as you have believed, and they received their healing and could see again.

So what is the internal structure of this miracle?

1. The Blind Men Went to Jesus and Asked for Mercy, and Prayed

There are instances in the Bible where a person with an illness would be brought to Jesus and He would say “your sins are forgiven” (Matthew 9: 1 – 7). It is only forgiveness from God and the mercy of God that can grant a person a miracle. It is therefore crucial to go to God in prayer asking for forgiveness, asking for mercy, and making your request to God (Matthew 7: 7 – 8).

If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus and made Him your Lord and Saviour, this is a good time. Click HERE to pray the Salvation Prayer.

Also make your request to God asking Him to intervene in an area of your life where you need a miracle and ask God to give you a miracle.

2. They Declared That Jesus Was Able to Do It

Jesus asked them in Matthew 9:28 “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” and they answered “Yes, Lord.” We need to proclaim that God is able to do all things. To avoid making empty declarations that are lacking in faith, we need to say it in faith and believe it.

How do we obtain faith? By studying the Word and hearing the Word. Here is what the Bible says in Romans 10 verse 17:

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (New King James Version)

So when we study the Word, hear the Word preached, meditate on it; it builds up our faith and we can boldly declare the things God is able to do. This is necessary because of the next step.

3. It is Unto You According to Your Faith

In Matthew 9: 29 – 30 says:

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened.

Imagine if they really did not believe. They would not have received a miracle because Jesus said “according to your faith”. God cannot lie. See Numbers 23 verse 19:

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (New King James Version)

That is why it is important to build up your faith generally and specifically in an area of need. If you need healing, study the Word and listen to the Word on healing. If you need financial breakthrough, study the Word and listen to the Word on financial abundance, etc. Build up your faith in that area because it is crucial for your miracle.

Prayer Points

1. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, forgive me and by your blood cleanse me of all wrongdoing.

2. Lord, help me to regularly study your Word and meditate on your Word.

3. Ask the Lord for something you want Him to do in your life this week.
