Rooted Daily: Put on the Whole Armour of God

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:10–18

Every believer is in a spiritual battle. This is not a battle we chose, but it is one we cannot avoid. The moment you surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you became a soldier in the army of God — and the enemy does not ignore soldiers. The apostle Paul, writing to the church in Ephesus, did not tell believers to hide from the battle. He told them to get dressed for it.

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."— Ephesians 6:10–11, NKJV

Notice where our strength comes from. We are not told to be strong in ourselves, in our intelligence, in our experience or in our willpower. We are told to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. The battle is spiritual, and so is the strength required to win it.

Know Your Real Enemy and Put On the Whole Armour of God

Many people waste their energy fighting the wrong opponent. They fight their spouse, their colleague, their neighbour or their family member. But Paul makes it clear that people are not our true enemy.

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."— Ephesians 6:12, NKJV

When you understand that your battle is spiritual, you stop attacking people and start praying. You stop reacting in the flesh and start standing in the Spirit. You stop struggling in the flesh to make impact, and start feeding on the Word of God, understanding it, meditating on it, and applying it.

Put on The Whole Armour, Not Part of It!

Paul commands us to put on the whole armour of God — not some of it, not our favourite pieces, but all of it.

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."— Ephesians 6:13, NKJV

A soldier with a helmet but no breastplate is still exposed. A soldier with a shield but no sword can defend but cannot advance. God has provided complete protection, and He expects us to wear all of it.

The Belt of Truth. "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth" (Ephesians 6:14, NKJV). The belt held everything together on a Roman soldier. In the same way, truth holds the believer's life together. Live honestly. Believe the truth of God's Word rather than the lies of the enemy.

The Breastplate of Righteousness. "…having put on the breastplate of righteousness" (Ephesians 6:14, NKJV). The breastplate guarded the heart. We are made righteous through faith in Christ, and we protect our hearts by living rightly before God.

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace. "…and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:15, NKJV). A soldier's shoes gave him stability and readiness. Walk in peace with God and with people, and be ready to share the good news of Jesus wherever your feet take you.

The Shield of Faith. "…above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one" (Ephesians 6:16, NKJV). The enemy fires darts of doubt, fear, discouragement and accusation. Faith in God's promises extinguishes every single one of them — not some, but all.

The Helmet of Salvation. "And take the helmet of salvation" (Ephesians 6:17, NKJV). The helmet protects the mind. When you are secure in your salvation, the enemy cannot torment your thoughts with condemnation and fear. Guard your mind with the assurance of what Christ has done for you.

The Sword of the Spirit. "…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17, NKJV). This is the only offensive weapon in the armour. Jesus used it in the wilderness when He answered every temptation with "It is written." A believer who does not know the Word is a soldier without a sword. Read it. Study it. Speak it.

Prayer Is How The Armour Is Fastened In Place

Paul does not end with the sword. He ends with prayer.

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints."— Ephesians 6:18, NKJV

Prayer is how the armour is fastened in place. A prayerless soldier is a defeated soldier. But the believer who prays always — in every season, about everything, with perseverance — stands firm no matter what the enemy sends.

Today's Reflection

Which piece of the armour have you been neglecting? Is it truth, because compromise has crept in? Is it the sword, because your Bible has remained closed? Is it prayer, because busyness has crowded it out?

Do not go into today's battles undressed. Put on the whole armour of God — deliberately, prayerfully, daily.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith."— 1 Peter 5:8–9, NKJV

Have You Surrendered to Jesus?

The armour of God is given to the children of God. If you have not surrendered to Jesus and made Him the Lord of your life, surrender to Him today by praying the Salvation Prayer out loud and meaning it in your heart. Or maybe you need to return to Jesus and rededicate your life to Him because though you were born again before, you have fallen away. Jesus is waiting to receive you back. Here is the link to the SALVATION PRAYER

"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."— Romans 10:9, NKJV

Prayer

  1. Heavenly Father, thank You for not sending me into battle unprotected.

  2. Today, I put on the whole armour of God. I gird my waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness. I shod my feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. I take up the shield of faith to quench every fiery dart of the wicked one. I put on the helmet of salvation and take up the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word.

  3. Teach me to pray always in the Spirit and to remain watchful. Strengthen me to stand against every scheme of the enemy, and having done all, to keep standing.

  4. I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

In Jesus' name, amen.
