The Power in the Blood of Jesus — and How to Plead It Over Your Life

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." — Revelation 12:11

Many believers have sung about the blood of Jesus for years without knowing how to use it practically. We know that we are taking the blood at Communion, and we mention it in hymns. Yet when the enemy attacks our homes, health, finances or peace of mind, we often forget the most powerful provision God has placed in our hands.

This article looks at why the blood of Jesus carries such power, what it means to "plead the blood," and how you can apply it to your life every day.

It All Started in Eden

In his book The Blood Triumph, Bishop David Oyedepo begins close to where the Bible begins: in the Garden of Eden. He describes Eden as a place of dominion, provision, health and daily fellowship with God. Man lacked nothing and was in charge [See Genesis Chapter 2].

Then sin entered, and man lost everything. Adam was driven out of the garden into a life of wilderness and struggle. Bishop Oyedepo teaches that sin is the barrier between man and his return to Eden [See Genesis 3]. Unrighteousness drove man out, and only righteousness can bring him back.

That is the good news of the Gospel. God did not leave us outside the garden. Through the blood of His Son, He made a way back. The Bible says in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life".

The Blood: God's Final Answer

Bishop Oyedepo points to the story of the Exodus to show what the blood does. God sent plague after plague through Moses, but Pharaoh would not release Israel. Everything changed when the Passover lamb was slain and its blood was applied to the doorposts (Exodus 12).

As Bishop Oyedepo puts it, "The blood is God's last resort, His last card for man's deliverance." He notes that after the blood, Moses no longer had to plead, "Let my people go." It was Pharaoh who now wanted Israel gone.

The same is true for us. "For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7). The lamb in Egypt was only a shadow of what was to come. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). What the blood of an animal did for one night in Egypt, the blood of Jesus has done once and for all for everyone who believes in Him.

The lamb in Exodus had to be "without blemish" (Exodus 12:5). Jesus is the perfect Lamb, and we are redeemed "with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:19). Because His sacrifice was perfect, the covering it gives is perfect too. There is no sin too great for it to cleanse and no bondage too strong for it to break.

When you are born again, you enter the blood covenant. Bishop Oyedepo describes this covenant as your stronghold, the blood that speaks "pass over" to every evil. Just as the destroyer could not enter any house marked with the blood, the enemy has no legal access to a life covered by the blood of Jesus. God has "delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: in whom we have redemption through his blood" (Colossians 1:13–14).

The blood of Jesus is not silent. Hebrews 12:24 tells us that we have come "to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel." Abel's blood cried out for vengeance, but the blood of Jesus speaks mercy, forgiveness, healing, protection and victory. It speaks on your behalf before God, and it speaks against every accusation of the enemy.

Israel did not walk out of Egypt as slaves who had barely escaped. They left with silver and gold, "and there was not one feeble person among their tribes" (Psalm 105:37). That is what the blood did for them. If the blood of a lamb could bring out a whole nation strong and prosperous, how much more will the blood of the Son of God do for you? This is why you can stand on God's promise: "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling" (Psalm 91:10).

What the Blood of Jesus Has Done for You

The Bible shows that the blood of Jesus has done far more than most of us realise:

• It redeemed you. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7).

• It cleanses you. "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).

• It justified you. "Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him" (Romans 5:9).

• It gives you access to God. We have "boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus" (Hebrews 10:19).

• It defeated the enemy. The saints overcame Satan "by the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 12:11).

Jesus' shed blood accomplished more than redemption and the remission of sins; it reversed every part of the curse, including sickness, poverty, depression, strife, addiction and bondage to sin. The Blood Is Not Just to Know — It Is to Use

Bishop Oyedepo stresses a truth many believers miss. Knowing about the blood is not enough, and neither is understanding it. What counts is knowing how to use it [See Exodus 12].

He illustrates this with the Passover. If the Israelites had only bought the lambs and shed the blood but never put it on their doorposts, the destroyer would still have struck their homes. The blood had to be applied. See Exodus 12:7 which gives the command to apply the blood: "And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it."

The scripture also says Exodus 12:13 says "...and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt."

In the chapter titled "Now, Use It!", he describes the blood of Jesus as the most effective weapon in spiritual warfare. He encourages believers, when oppression or depression comes, to boldly declare the blood of Jesus against the enemy. Faith, he reminds us, is a fight and not a feeling (1 Timothy 6:12).

What Does It Mean to "Plead the Blood"?

The phrase can sound strange, as if we were begging God for something. But pleading the blood is not begging at all.

KCM explains that "pleading the blood" is really a legal term, like a lawyer pleading his case before a judge by presenting evidence and facts. When you plead the blood, you present the evidence of what Jesus has done. It is another way of applying the blood to a situation in your life, and there is protection and deliverance in the blood. KCM also teaches that when the accuser says we are guilty, our plea before God, the Righteous Judge, is the blood of Jesus; it declares we are not guilty and free from the penalty of sin. So when the devil reminds you of your past, you do not argue with him. You point to the blood. KCM

How to Plead the Blood of Jesus

Drawing from the teaching of Kenneth Copeland Ministries and Bishop Oyedepo, here are practical ways to apply the blood every day.

1. Make sure you are under the covenant. The blood works for those who belong to Jesus. The Israelites were protected because they were in covenant with God and obeyed His instruction. Pleading the blood begins with a relationship with Christ.

2. Know what the blood has paid for. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Study the scriptures above until you are convinced that the blood has covered your sins, your healing, your peace and your protection.

3. Speak it out loud. Revelation 12:11 links the blood to "the word of their testimony." The blood is applied through your confession of faith.

4. Plead the blood over your family. KCM suggests laying hands on your children as they leave the house and saying, "In the Name of Jesus, I plead the blood of Jesus over [name]." Kcm

5. Plead the blood over your travels. KCM encourages believers to plead the blood over their car for protection, and to do the same before entering a store, a stadium or anywhere life takes them. KCM

6. Plead the blood over your home and health. Apply it over your house, your body and your finances, just as Israel applied the blood to the doorposts.

7. Plead the blood against accusation and temptation. When Satan attacks, tempts you, or brings fear and torment, plead the blood. Refuse guilt and condemnation, because "there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Kenneth Copeland Ministries

8. Walk in righteousness. Bishop Oyedepo teaches that the decision against sin is our master decision in life. The blood cleanses us, and we honour it by turning away from what it cleansed us from.

A Simple Declaration to Get You Started

Father, in the Name of Jesus, I thank You for the precious blood of Jesus shed for me. I declare that I am redeemed, forgiven and made righteous by the blood. I plead the blood of Jesus over my life, my family, my home, my health, my finances and my going out and coming in. Satan, you have no legal right over anything that belongs to me, for the blood of Jesus is against you. I overcome you by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of my testimony. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A Call to Surrender

The authority to plead the blood of Jesus belongs to the children of God. The Israelites in Egypt were covered because they were God's covenant people who applied the blood as He commanded. In the same way, the blood of Jesus becomes your shield when you become His.

Jesus shed His blood for you because He loves you. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
